‘Black By Popular Demand’ | Idiosyncratic Black-owned & operated art gallery makes East Point it's forever home
Black Art in America seeks to provide a permanent repository of Black arts & culture for the Southside – and beyond.
EAST POINT, Ga. — ‘We’re just getting started.’
These four simple words are delivered with earnest confidence to Vox Pop ATL by Najee Dorsey, the unassuming co-owner / operator of East Point’s newest oasis of Black art & culture, Black Art In America.
Before claiming the southeast corner of the Semmes Rd & Connally Drive intersection as its official brick-and-mortar headquarters here in Tri-Cities, Najee along with his wife & business partner Seteria, the Dorseys spent the better part of a dozen years cultivating an extensive network of Blacks creatives, collectors and enthusiasts across the country and beyond.
“I had no idea the impact that this space could have, particularly for the immediate community here,” affirms Dorsey.
“Whether they live down the street or on the other side of town, they recognize that this is a uniquely different space; made for us, with images of us.”
The self-ascribed ‘art school dropout’ has spent most of his career developing his own artistic voice in the form of digital mixed-media collages that incorporates unsung Black figures throughout American history.
Dorsey lovingly refers to his artistic creations as his ‘gumbo.’
Other prominent creatives featured at Black Art in America include a bevy of renowned artists such as Charmaine Minniefield, Fabian ‘Occasional Superstar’ Williams, Nnamdi Okonkwo, April Harrison, Stacey Brown, and Obiora Nwankwo to name a few.
Black Art in America is even hosting a fundraiser for the BAIA Foundation, called BAIA After Dark on the evening of Saturday, September 3, 2022, from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm.
Attendees can look forward to hors d’oeuvres and champagne, in addition, to live jazz in the garden. For more information about this event, visit the Eventbrite link here.
