“It is an honor to serve my City.” - Fitzgerald Smith Jr.
EAST POINT, Ga - On 5/13/24, a long-time East Pointer lost their battle with colon cancer and the city of East Point lost one of its most loving and devout sons.
This unsung gem of a man was a pillar in his community, touching the lives of all he encountered here in East Point, from Tri-Cities High School and the EP Farmer’s Market to the city’s Main Street Association and the Food Well Alliance Steering Committee.

His name is Fitzgerald L. Smith, Jr.
Born into a family that valued education and service, he has continued this legacy throughout his life.
From his work in various fields to his involvement in local organizations and his love for gardening, Fitzgerald has shown unwavering commitment to serving others.
I called him ‘Fitz,’ a nickname I’m sure others shared. We first met at the East Point Farmer’s Market while I was on my very first work assignment for a local news station.
Continually quick with a smile and a hug and always found the time to chat with you whenever we ran across one another.
“One of the best human beings and one of the few people I can say that truly practiced what he preached,” expressed East Point resident, Deacon Kaine in a Facebook post.
“He gave love, shared wisdom, and had an impact on everyone who was blessed enough to know him and I’ll sincerely miss him.”
A dedicated community advocate, Fitz served as a member of the East Point Main Street Association board for 10 years and, as day manager for the East Point Farmer’s Market from 2012 to 2019.
Smith was even awarded the East Point Unsung Hero Award in 2019.
A special memorial service was held for Fitzgerald Smith on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at the East Point Historical Society.
Fitzgerald Smith, Jr. leaves behind a son and daughter, Fitzgerald III & Adrianne.
