‘Kickin’ It Old School’ | Local non-profit organization and city government join forces to help neighboring families welcome the new school season
Just in time for the upcoming 2022 school year, IGNITE Resource Center along with the College Park City Council hosted the City-Wide Back-2-School Resource Fair and KidsFest.
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. – It was the best of both worlds for the families of school-bound children in College Park on Saturday, August 6, 2022.
As the perfect way to usher in the upcoming school year, IGNITE College Park Resource Center along with members from the College Park City Council, the Georgia International Convention Center, Atlanta Dream & College Park SkyHawks hosted the City-Wide Back-2-School Resource Fair and KidsFest.
This hybrid event merged the IGNITE Resource Center’s annual back-to-school which celebrates its third year with the City of College Park’s KidsFest.
And better yet, for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, these events are in-person and indoors!
“This is an opportunity to get resources into the hands of our families, but also to provide some fun, social activities,” Jamelle McKenzie, Executive Director for IGNITE College Park Resource Center tells Vox Pop ATL.
“We're spotlighting a lot of community organizations that are doing some amazing things here in the South Fulton Metropolitan area.”
The event was held at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) located at the 2000 Convention Center Concourse right in College Park just a stone’s throw from Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
Free book bags, school supplies, groceries, and face masks were distributed during the event, in addition to a free book library, door prizes, live entertainment, a ‘fun zone’ for the kids, and even a petting zoo.
The Executive Director of the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC), Mercedes Miller had this to share:
“College Park is a city that gives. This has been very beneficial. I had so many people as I walked around just say, ‘Thank You.”
When asked what her main takeaway from this year’s event was, Miller had this to say.
“I think that this is the way that we should do it from now.”
