‘Long Live the King’ | Despite frigid temps, the annual MLK Day of Service event returns to East Point for its fourth year
The City of East Point Government hosts popular community event in honor of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
East Point, GA — This past January 17th marked the 4th Annual MLK Day of Service here in East Point, and while the thermostat that morning didn’t even break into the ’40s, the participation for the occasion was anything but lukewarm.
Started as a way to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in our very own corner of metro Atlanta, the event was hosted at the Jefferson Park Recreation Center from 11 am-2 pm.
Dozens were on hand to contribute to the free community event. The unified front consisting of city leaders, various sponsors, and volunteers, provided food for approximately 250 families, as well as, FREE COVID tests were administered as well.
Initially designed as a catered, casual sit-down affair, for the past two years, East Point’s MLK Day of Service took the form of a socially-distant drive-thru to ensure the safety of those in attendance while under pandemic conditions.
"What fills my coffers is knowing that East Pointers are really prioritizing their health, welfare & safety because we're leading the way. We’ve said that's important to us," East Point’s mayor, Deana Holiday Ingraham tells Vox Pop ATL.
“I'm excited to be able to be in this role, to continue to lead and serve in this way to make sure that our residents have what they need to thrive."
