‘Something in Commons’ | City of East Point hosts groundbreaking ceremony for $111+ Million revitalization project
Dozens attended the long-awaited announcement of Downtown Commons.
EAST POINT, Ga. — While the last week of December typically serves as the ‘bouncer’ of the calendar, steadily shepherding us (sometimes reluctantly) towards the inevitable exit of the current year.
However, this past December ushered in, not only a new year, but the highly-anticipated promise of a new horizon for the downtown business district of East Point, affectionately referred to as ‘The Commons.’
December 29th, 2023 marked the official groundbreaking for the East Point Commons Development project, and while the thermostat on the day of the event didn’t even break into the ’40s, the reception for the ceremony was anything but frosty.
Dozens of guests comprised of residents, business owners, and city officials, both past and present attended the event hosted by the city of East Point at the corner of W. Cleveland Ave. and East Point St.
The long-gestating development dubbed “The Commons” was officially voted on by East Point City Council back on November 10, 2021, when the city entered into a $111-million development agreement with Mynd Match Development Group of Atlanta, LLC for the downtown revitalization project.
“The Commons” will be a mixed-use hub situated directly in the heart of Downtown East Point and will occupy an approximately nine-acre site that will include residential, retail, commercial, green space, and public art.
“The Commons, which I affectionately call our “Legacy Project” is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build an equitable development in the heart of our downtown and continue to make East Point an attractive place to live, work, shop, play, and stay,” states Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham in a 2021 press release.
The 21,604 sq. ft. development will also include community amenities such as the following:
Library
Healthcare Facility
Grocery
Retail Space
Courtyard
Parking Deck
When asked about their opinion about what “The Commons” will provide for the city, East Point’s first Black mayor herself, Pasty Jo Hillard had this to share with Vox Pop ATL.
“There's been a possibility forever because we want to make the city grow. That's what makes something successful is to have the citizens involved. That's what I'm excited about.”
East Point residents close to the ‘The Commons’ build site can look for initial construction and demolition for Phase 1 to begin on February 19, 2024.
